Family Finds Calling in Law Enforcement

AKRON, Ohio — For a long time, Larry McCormick protected and served.

What You Need To Know

  • One family has protected and served for more than 80 years
  • This family has four generations in law enforcement
  • They say they’re proud to continue serving their community

”It only lasted 30 years,” said McCormick, a retired officer.

The quality of serving rubbed off on his daughter, Angela.

“It got us to be together,” said McCormick

At a young age, she joined the police explorers program.

“It was something I could do with my dad,” said Angela Hawsman.

It started as quality time, but she quickly knew it would be something she did the rest of her life.

“That kind of just solidified what I wanted to do the rest of my life,” said Angela. “I wanted to do something in law enforcement.”

It just so happens, she and her husband, Mike, met as teenagers in the police explorers program.

“We’re never home,” said Mike, a Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputy. “We’re very busy.”

They’re busy, and tight knit, Angie and Mike being the third generation of law enforcement in their family and their son, being the fourth.

“I looked up to him, looked up to my grandpa,” said Michael Hawsman, son of Mike and Angie and a Summit County deputy. “Seeing him put on the uniform everyday it really made me want to do it.”

It seems that law enforcement is in their DNA. Although times look different, as each career goes on, this family remains there for each other in a way some might not understand.

“So, if he comes home and says he had a bad day,” said Angie. “We can talk about it as a family.”

As a whole, the family has more than 80 years of experience in law enforcement and they continue to love their job every step of the way.

“I think the more people you reach to explain our job and our positions,” said Mike. “What we have to enforce for the state of Ohio. You’ll get some good and you’ll get some bad. Hopefully we’ll get more good than bad.”
